New Westminster was founded as the second capital of the colony of British Columbia. From the very beginning, the city has had great potential for rail and water transportation. Modern-day New Westminster lies 18 kilometers from the province’s largest city, Vancouver. In the mid-19th century, Lieutenant-Governor Richard Moody recommended that the city be transformed into the capital of the new colony of British Columbia.
